At a fundraising dinner for a school that serves learning disabled children, the father of one of the students delivered a speech that would never be forgotten by all who attended.

After extolling the school and its dedicated staff, he offered a question.
“When not interfered with by outside influences, everything nature does is done with perfection. Yet my son, Shay cannot learn things as other children do. He cannot understand things as other children do. Where is the natural order of things in my son?”

The audience was stilled by the query. The father continued. “I believe, that when a child like Shay comes into the world, an opportunity to realize true human nature presents itself, and it comes, in the way other people treat that child.”

Then he told the following story: Shay and his father had walked past a park where some boys Shay knew were playing baseball. Shay asked, “Do you think they’ll let me play?”

“Can I see my baby?” the happy new mother asked. When the bundle was nestled in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped. The doctor turned quickly and looked out the tall hospital window.

The baby had been born without ears. Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was marred.

When he rushed home from school one day and flung himself into his mother’s arms, she sighed, knowing that his life was to be a succession of heartbreaks. He blurted out the tragedy. “A boy, a big boy…called me a freak.”

He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for that. He developed a gift, a talent for literature. “You might mingle with other young people,” his mother reproved him, but felt a tenderness in her heart.

The boy’s father had a session with the family physician. Could nothing be done?” I believe I could graft on a pair of outer ears, if they could be procured” the doctor decided. Whereupon the search began for a person who would make such a sacrifice for a young man.

On a freezing January morning, being afflicted severely by biting cold and torrential wind, we desperately needed to travel to Aligarh on the morning train. Myself, my wife and our daughter Zulfa waited by the roadside for a rickshaw (taxi) to take us to Panipat Railway Station. As our waiting became prolonged and the temperature continued to drop, we were becoming more and more anxious about missing the morning train. Unfortunately the next scheduled train to Aligarh was due later in the evening, too late to complete the long journey in daylight.

“Dad how long must we wait, I’m feeling really really cold”, Zulfa asked. “Be patient, Sweetheart, a rickshaw is probably on its way”, I said.

Suddenly breaking through the morning mist, I noticed a tuc-tuc rickshaw approaching in our direction with an elderly gentleman at its helm. I quickly managed to grab his attention to stop and pleaded with him to take us to the railway station most urgently, as we had little time left to catch the Aligarh train.

The driver urged us to quickly board the rickshaw and started to help us with the luggage. Although I was keen to agree a fare before-hand to avoid any disagreements later, he assured me that he was a good man who did not create problems for his passengers.

Introduction
On the Day of Judgment, two things will be very strong intercessors: Fasting and Quran. Fasting will say to Allah swt, “Forgive this servant because during the day I stopped your servant from eating, drinking and fulfilling his desires”. The Quran will say to Allah swt, “Forgive this servant because I used to keep him awake at night”. ie He used to stay up and read a lot of Quran. Allah will accept both of their intercessions and forgive the person.

In Ramadan, the noor of the day and the noor of the night are different. During the day, there is the noor of fasting and during the night there is the noor of Taraweeh, Tahajjud, Tilawat, etc. Muslims should try to attain both noors to the fullest of their ability. Allah commanded us to read the Quran: اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ “Recite (O Muhammad SAW) what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Quran).”

Just like many other commands addressing Nabi (sa), the ummah is also included in the command (like أَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِدُلُوكِ الشَّمْسِ…). Notice that the ayah commands to recite, rather than read. Reading entails understanding, but reciting can be done with or without understanding. Allah swt also says: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّـهِ وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَنفَقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ سِرًّا وَعَلَانِيَةً يَرْجُونَ تِجَارَةً لَّن تَبُورَ “Verily, those who recite the Book of Allah (this Quran), and perform Salat and spend (in charity) out of what We have provided for them, secretly and openly, hope for a (sure) tradegain that will never perish. That He may pay them their wages in full, and give them (even) more, out of His Grace. Verily! He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense).”
